Ways to Protect Your Skin as We Age

As we age, out skin begins to change. The texture and the thickness change right along with the moisture content of each layer. While aging is something everyone hopes to do, most would like to look their best while getting older. Here are some tips that will help to protect your skin as the years go by.

Change the Way You Shower

The same goes for bathing. As we age, less time spent in the shower is better for us. The ideal amount of time is around five minutes. That is enough to allow the skin to get the most benefits regarding moisture. Stay in for more than ten minutes and your skin will begin to lose moisture.
Remember that a little moisturizer after you gets out of the shower is a real thing. Use just enough to soak into the skin and leave it feeling hydrated.

Adjust the Temperature Setting in the House

Heating and cooling systems do more than control the temperature. They also impact the humidity level in the house. What you want to do is keep the home from becoming too hot while also maintaining a healthy amount of moisture in the air. The combination will help to hydrate the skin and keep it looking more robust and full.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

You do need the vitamin D production that occurs when the sun comes in contact with your skin. What you do not need is the damage that ultraviolet rays will do to the skin. Always wear a sunscreen and feel free to invest in some fun hats to wear whenever you are outside for longer periods of time. You’ll still get the benefits while avoiding any additional damage to your skin.

Stop Smoking

You already know plenty of reasons to quit, but here is one more to consider. Smoking reduces elasticity and promotes wrinkling. Even if you have smoked for years, talk to a professional and begin weaning off the nicotine. In addition to reducing damage to your skin, you’ll feel better.

Your Diet Matters Too

Change the way you eat and drink if you want to enjoy smoother skin. Consume more complex carbohydrates since they do not tend to promote wrinkling. Oatmeal is a good example. Oranges provide fiber, vitamins, and are a good source of hydration. The fat in avocados will also help keep the skin more supple.

There are plenty of things you can do to keep your skin healthy as you age. Talk to a professional about any specific skin conditions you may have and come up with some additional ways to reduce wrinkling and blemishes. Doing so will allow you to feel better about your appearance and get more out of life.
